A standard 20ft tank container carries about 45% more liquid cargo than a 20ft container fully loaded with drums — "more cargo for the same freight" — which lowers the land and ocean cost per unit of cargo. Tank containers also save the purchase and disposal cost of drums. These are two direct savings in the transport chain.
There is no costly or time-consuming drum filling process, and no cost of buying, handling or disposing of drums. Compared with drummed transport, the risk of product contamination is lower, and there is less waste and loss from residue left in emptied drums.
